There were two earlier castles situated where the present Lichtenstein Castle stands on an almost vertical cliff on the Swabian Alb in Southern Germany. Neither of those earlier castles exists nowadays. The family of the Knights of Lichtenstein died out in the 17th century. In 1837 King Wilhelm of Württemberg sold the area to his cousin Wilhelm, Count of Württemberg. He had a new castle built on the foundation walls of the first Lichtenstein castle. From 1840 to 1842 a fairytale castle was built, which had been inspired by Wilhelm Hauff’s novel “Lichtenstein”. The interior rooms were richly decorated with ornamental paintings by the artist Eberlein. The building was restored from 1980, sponsored by the Wüstenrot Foundation and the Sponsoring Association for the Conservation of Lichtenstein Castle (“Fördergemeinschaft zur Erhaltung des Schlosses Lichtenstein e.V.”).
