Litomysl is a very old municipality. In the locality of today's chateau, there used to stand a border fort of the Slavnik family in 981, which was mentioned in Kosmas's Chronicle. By then, however, the Litomysl fort must have existed for quite a long time because the Slavonic missionaries Cyril and Methodius founded a Christian St. Kliment's church in Litomysl during they mission to the Czech lands at the end of the 9th century. In 1098 a premonstratensian monastery was founded in the location of the fort, and later became the basis of a bishopric covering the east of Bohemia and western Moravia, founded here in 1344 by emperor Charles IV.
The original interior of the Renaissance chateau was luxurious. A considerable impact on the interior was the fire in 1775, which damaged part of the original furnishings. The fact that Litomysl was the birthplace of Bedrich Smetana had a significant influence on the appearance of the chateau's
